A long-awaited release within the South Coast’s local music scene, Coach Party’s first EP under their new name and record label secures the Isle of Wight group as a force to be reckoned with within UK indie music. Formally known as JEPH, Coach Party have continued to grow in popularity, with numerous support slots alongside the likes of Jerry Williams and Flowvers and will inevitably continue to make a name for themselves following this release.

Debut single, Oh Lola, kicks off the EP in style, with an upbeat drum track to contrast the laid back vibe in the verses and front-woman Jess Eastwood’s incredible vocals. Following an easy-going verse, the track livens up in the choruses and boasts enviable guitar tracks throughout. Although very short and sweet, the track helps to set a tone for the EP to follow, enticing listeners with the group’s rebellious, fun-filled lyrics.

With it’s softer vocals and beautiful dreamy atmosphere to contrast the gritty realism of the lyrics, Bleach is a perfect track to lead on from the opener. A steady and effective, yet fun and energetic bassline locks you in with a cymbal-heavy drum track. To add yet another piece of the tracks winning formula the choruses offer the perfect opportunity for audiences to get involved at future gigs. Existential lyrics and brutal honesty make this track a personal highlight of the EP and allow many of us an opportunity to relate to it’s words. The beautiful instrumentals and self-aware lyrics throughout make it clear that the world may, in fact, be too small for Coach Party.

Sticking with the brutal honesty in Bleach’s lyrics, Puke details a relationship breakdown, yet somehow still manages to show off Coach Party’s carefree attitude, all alongside a memorable guitar riff we’re still finding ourselves humming along to. It also boasts a complimentary bassline to match. The track’s fun-filled chorus has proved to be unforgettable, with a melody we’ve been unable to shake from our heads. A relaxed, stripped back bridge section allows for a brilliant build up to a guitar-heavy instrumental section and eventually rounds off the track to an abrupt ending.

Impressive guitar tracks and endlessly relatable lyrics make up Breakdown, the fourth EP track. A chaotic emotional rollercoaster from start to finish, this track has several tempo changes and shows off the group’s ability to compose an incredibly diverse instrumental. We were kept guessing throughout from the relaxed intro all the way through to the highly energetic, fun-filled instrumental break following the slower section mid-song. Just as it feels we are nearing the end of the track, the instrumental picks back up and offers unforgettable guitars alongside a ridiculously cool drum beat.

“Coach Party seem to know exactly how to leave us all wanting more from them”

Space is another stylish indie-pop tune, with a brilliant contrast between it’s first verse and the rest of the song. As one of the three singles, Space helped to prepare us for the full EP and represents much of what Coach Party are capable of; endlessly enjoyable rock-influenced tunes, with beautifully honest lyrics. As we edge closer to the end of the EP, Space offers some easy listening while maintaining the incredibly high standard set by the previous tracks. The same can be said for Red Jumper Boy, the final track on the EP. A gorgeous track, made up of Eastwood’s dreamy vocals and a relaxed drum beat, all building up to an upbeat final track. With ambitious, yet well-executed and perfectly suited guitar parts, Red Jumper Boy is another EP highlight of ours. Offering listeners a fun, unique guitar solo towards the end of the track, Coach Party seem to know exactly how to leave us all wanting more from them.

From start to finish, Party Food is an incredible ride and boasts beautiful performances from all four members that truly help to show just what this band is capable of and will inevitably make a great name for the group. It is clear, following this release, that Coach Party are nowhere near finished and we’re excited to see what comes next for the endlessly talented group.
