Quarantine Q&A #9 – We caught up with Ivan from China Bears to hear about how he’s doing in lockdown!

We here at Underscore Part 3 HQ are like most of the UK are scratching our heads at what on earth to do in this weird and not wonderful world we’ve found ourselves thrown into. Well considering we’re always chatting shit to the best acts on the sea of global indie we decided to use this to our advantage and get a plethora of acts to give us some lockdown tips! China Bears blew us away when they dropped their EP ‘I’ve Never Met Anyone Like You’ last year which ended being our EP of the year so when we had the chance we had to get them in for our #stayathome Sessions on Instagram – ahead of the session we managed to chat with Ivan to find how he’s been doing in these crazy times!

Hey! We hope you are doing ok during lock down! Who are you currently staying/living with?

Hey, I’m not doing too bad thanks, keeping busy and sane! I’m currently in lockdown with Frazer and the rest of our family. James and Dean are also both at their family homes keeping safe!

Recently Off the Record did a piece asking people for their top 3 isolation albums, could we ask yours? One classic, one newish and one curve ball?

I’m going to cheat on this question sorry!
Classic album:
Midnight Organ Fight – Frightened Rabbit
High violet – The National
Shallow bed – Dry The River
New albums:
Everyday nothing – Brooke Bentham
You know I’m Not going anywhere – The Districts
Neon Skyline – Andy Shauf
And it’s still alright – Nathaniel Rateliff
Forever Whatever – October Drift
Tapestry – Carol King

What’s your current favourite series/TV show you’re binging?

I’m currently binging community, so funny! I’ve also gone through the mandalorian and the last man on earth.

What is the first thing you’ll do after lockdown is lifted?

The first thing I’d like to do after lockdown is get in a rehearsal room with the rest of the band and go through some new tracks we’ve been working on whilst stuck at home!

What is your favourite snacky snack for quarantine?

During lockdown I’ve been really getting into making smoothies, maybe I’ll start a smoothie company one day!

What are your top tips for staying sane during isolation?

– Talk to your friends and family
– Be kind to yourself
– Try and keep yourself productive, maybe find a new hobby or spend more time on the ones you already like doing!
– Bake some banana bread

If you could go to any gig tonight who would be on the line up?

If I could go to a gig tonight I’d love to see some of my favourite artists who I haven’t seen live yet, so it would look something like this:

Manchester orchestra
Andy Shauf
Christian lee Hutson
Julia Jacklin

A lot of acts are doing lots of digital things to entertain their fans, have you done anything yet or do you have any plans? What are/were they?

Yeah we’ve been doing a lot of live streams across our socials. We’ve also put some cover videos and some isolation type versions of our songs on our YouTube and over socials! It’s been fun and a great way to stay connected with everyone.

What’s in store for you/the band once life goes back to normal?
Once life goes back to normal we’ll be hopefully doing what we normally do which is playing as much as we can and working on songs in the studio! I think it’s all gonna feel a lot sweeter than it ever has before!
